Secret Snowdonia for food lovers

Kirsty 20 June 2017

Snowdonia conjures up great mountains and is a heaven for outdoor enthusiasts, but there is also the secret Snowdonia for food lovers.

As well as stunning landscapes it has great food too – Michelin star restaurants and award-winning artisan producers amongst intriguing villages put Snowdonia on the map as a foodie destination too.

From our local knowledge and owner recommendations, here’s our bucket list of must-visit food outlets and inspiring towns just waiting to be explored and enjoyed in Snowdonia…

Conwy and Llandudno

If you are staying at Tailor’s Cottage, Conwy and Llandudno have an intriguing mix of traditional and modern food; there’s an award-winning butcher, independent wine merchant and, best of all, famous fresh Conwy Mussels.

Fabulous restaurants

Tyddyn Llan - Considered to be one of Wales’ finest restaurants, this Michelin starred eatery is located on the eastern outskirts of Snowdonia, and is a great choice for a delicious Sunday lunch.

Amser Da - Next door to the ‘best deli in Wales’, Blas ar Fwyd, head to Amser Da to treat yourself to local provisions to cook at home, or stay for lunch or dinner to enjoy fantastic tapas options.

Castle Cottage in Harlech - Have a day out in Harlech and, whilst there, indulge in lunch or dinner at the award-winning Castle Cottage. It has a reputation for good food both locally and with our Sheepskin guests.

Mawddach Restaurant - With an emphasis on utilising fresh, locally sourced produce, Mawddach Restaurant has a modern, ‘un-fussy’ menu which suits the interior of the building. We recommend treating yourselves if you are staying at nearby Spring Barn.

Snowdonia farm shop

Bodnant Food Centre - This spectacular food centre and Rhug Estate shop make finding local food for your cottage stay in Northern Snowdonia a great pleasure, and give the opportunity to sample lots of delicious produce offering a vast array of local produce both from its own estate, as well as carefully selected local producers.

The Rhug Estate and Shop - With a deli counter that contains over 70 varieties of cheeses, homemade pies, cured meats and of course a butchers counter, plus a plethora of other provisions, there's few better places to shop when staying in the area. If you have a little more time stop off at the Rhug Estate Bistro for lunch or treat yourself to evening dinner at the Hayloft restaurant at Bodnant.

Snowdonia food festivals

The majority of food festivals take place after harvest making autumn a enjoyable time to visit. The Conwy Feast takes place over two days in October and is a great event for foodies of all ages to enjoy.

Alternatively, Anglesey Oyster & Welsh Produce Festival, in Trearddur Bay (October), showcases a great range of Welsh producers as well as lots of delicious seafood and oysters of course. Perhaps try oysters for the first time or get your fix here if you’re already a fan. If seafood is not your thing maybe the sausage competition will tantalise your tastebuds.

So what are you waiting for? With a beautiful drive through rolling hills with coastal views to take in, plan your visit to this foodie destination. Snowdonia’s quaint towns are waiting to explored and with cosy cottages to return home to after a full day exploring, we look forward to hearing from you soon.
