Located in an idyllic village amongst the glorious rolling countryside of Rutland, this delightful cottage provides the perfect base for exploring the many attractions of the local area. Sightseer’s will be spoilt for choice with many historic buildings which dot the landscape including the 12th century Oakham Castle, Burghley House, a truly stunning Elizabethan house and a must visit for equestrian lovers and Rockingham Castle, a magnificent castle built by William the Conqueror. The area is a mecca for wildlife lovers and walkers with a myriad of paths and tracks to navigate including of course the famous Rutland Water which offers a variety of activities including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, boat trips, fishing, rock climbing, high ropes, abseiling, cycling and hot air ballooning.

This stylish former woodsman’s cottage has been sympathetically and lovingly renovated by its current owners mixing both old and new to provide a sophisticated and charming place in which to relax. Guests arriving will initially enter the open-plan ground floor comprising of lounge, dining area and kitchen and notice the bright and airy decor with clean lines interspersed with cosy homely touches. A wood burner in the lounge area provides both a focal point and a romantic atmosphere ensuring cosy evenings snuggled up in front of the TV or indulging in a favourite novel. The handmade bespoke dining table created from reclaimed timbers found in the cottage provides a place to enjoy any meal whether a quick bite to eat or a celebration, and the well-equipped kitchen provides everything required to cook up a storm should guests choose to dine in. The kitchen has an electric oven and induction hob, microwave, fridge with ice compartment, coffee machine and a handy dishwasher. During the warmer months, the stable door to the garden can be opened to allow for a cooling breeze. The tactile paint palette continues upstairs with light and spacious rooms. Climbing the stairs to the first floor guests will initially find a snug area with vintage style desk and chair, perfect for a moment of quiet contemplation or relaxation. The bedroom easily accommodates the comfy king-size bed and will ensure a good night’s rest, with views over the green to the quintessential English village. Completing the accommodation is a beautiful shower room with shower and WC, benefiting from underfloor heating.

For those who enjoy spending time outdoors, the pretty garden enables guests to climb a little slate path to an upper tier, where there is a patio area with garden furniture and a fire pit/BBQ, providing opportunities for al fresco dining. You can chain your bikes up in the garden, and being enclosed the garden is perfect for pets. There is roadside parking, subject to availability.

We enjoyed our stay in a lovely cosy & comfortable cottage in a handy location for visiting nearby towns & areas of interest. Lots of places to walk your dog, many of the pubs & cafes were also dog friendly. The owner Alex communicated with us regularly.

The cottage is full of character and beautifully appointed. Its in a lovely peaceful village and its really easy to drive to all the sites of interest in the area.

We stayed at smock & dog to celebrate my 70th birthday . It was just what we hoped for . Clean, comfortable & in a beautiful village of Braunston . We had a lovely meal at the local pub , it was delicious & well presented. We had 2 shnauzers with us ( 1 borrowed) everything round us was dog friendly . Definitely go again & 100 % recommend .

Smock and Dog is a lovely cottage in a village well placed for visiting the surrounding area. The owner kindly phoned with lots of handy information beforehand. The cottage is very clean and beautifully modernized, loved the comfortable bed and the shower as well. Sometimes holiday cottages for two can feel cramped, not this one. Exquisite decor, all the equipment anyone could possibly need and a superbly comfortable bed! Ideal just for relaxing or as a base for all the wonderful things to do and see in Rutland which are virtually on the quiet doorstep. Would recommend highly. Lovely owners and friendly villagers.

Excellent communication from hosts beforehand and during- from recommendations for dog walks to local pubs to places to visit. A small issue was swiftly resolved. Its a great location, in a picturesque village with a good local pub. On street parking available directly out the front. We had a lovely stay.

We appreciated the welcome goodie bag on our arrival, down to treats for our beardie. Thoughtful attention to basic provisions from the kitchen to the bathroom. Everything is there for a comfortable stay in a cleverly designed cottage, with extra touches of art, quirky furniture and a library. The cottage garden is a delight. This is a lovely cosy cottage with everything provided for a pleasant stay. We had excellent communication with the owner. There was a thoughtful welcome pack waiting for us on arrival and a welcoming phone call. We have stayed here three times in the past year and plan to book again soon.
