  • Explore the Olchon Valley on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
Property code: 86497

The Olchon Valley is situated on the Herefordshire/Welsh border within the Black Mountains on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It’s an area of special scientific interest, with a profusion of birds, plants and animals, some rare, along with no light pollution – it is a great place for stargazing. Here, you can leave the car behind and head into the Black Mountains, climb onto the Hatterrall Ridge to join the Offa’s Dyke Path where you can walk out to Hay Bluff and Twmpa, or enjoy the ruins of Llanthony Priory. There is also canoeing, pony trekking and climbing available within the park. For a more cultured day out, you can visit one of the many market towns including Hay-on-Wye, Abergavenny and Crickhowell.

The cottage is accessed via a farm track leading into the enclosed gardens. Step inside to the old stone porch which is steeped in history and take a seat on one of the stone shelves where you can remove your boots; this is a great area to store your wood and outdoor kit too. Step into the heart of the home where there are many character features such as stone floors. The kitchen is traditional with bespoke wooden cupboards and shelving offering an electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a table and chairs that’s perfect for breakfast and planning the day ahead. There is a change in level with stone steps into a small lobby where you can access the bathroom with a bath and WC. A further step gives access into the lounge/diner, a cosy space with large sofas that you can sink into and feel the warmth from the wood burner. Enjoy a film on the TV/DVD player in here before heading off to bed. There is a further change in level up to the dining area where you can enjoy a hearty meal around the large table and chairs. There is a great selection of books and games for guests to enjoy. The first floor is accessed via a set of steep cottage stairs; from the landing area, there is a double room with garden views and a super king zip and link bed and a double room with a king bed that offers access to a twin room. There is also a single room suitable for a child. To complete the accommodation on the first floor, there is a shower room with a shower and WC.

The cottage is surrounded by fields and mountains and has its own enclosed south-facing garden to sit in to admire the view. Wooden garden furniture, a parasol and a BBQ are provided. If you bring your dog, please keep them under control as there are usually sheep around. There is ample parking.

Please note if the cot and highchair are required, this must be requested at time of booking.

Lovely stay at this lovely characterful property, the views are wonderful! The cottage is well equipped and well looked after. Would definitely recommend some good walking boots as there is a lot of long walks to do! We stayed during the heatwave and loved how cool the cottage was in the daytime. Would love to visit again.

This beautiful cottage is located in a remote place . The approach roads are very narrow and windy. Once you are there it is very peaceful and a perfect location for walking on Offas Dyke. Great cottage for walkers. It is very old, so has lots of "character" but "character" does have a few draw backs. Low beams and doors are the issue, so you must be able to bend and duck alot ! The house though overall, is a credit to the owners as there are no other issues, they have made it as modern as possible inside. Lovely secluded location at least 30 minute drive from the main road. The cottage was well presented and had all the equipment needed for a self catering break.

Lovely quiet location. If you want remote, you've found the right place. No WiFi which gives a much needed rest from that rubbish. Great wood burner. Lovely layout.

Stunning place at the dead end of a valley. Quite as can be. We'll equipped. Very cool indoors as we were there during the heatwave. Garden lush. Very clean. Miles from anywhere. Dog friendly and great walking from the cottage. Plenty of wildlife and plenty of daft sheep. Walks along both valley ridges are cracking. Pub in Longtown is basic but finRead moree. Great place.
