Why the UK is beautiful in autumn

Kirsty 22 May 2017

In the cold nights, early sunsets and damp mornings, we can all recognise the tell-tale signs of that seasonal transition. Though we lament the end of summer, we look forward to the autumn – perhaps the most beautiful time to be in the UK.

There is something quite magical and beautiful about this time of year; the sounds, the smells, the long, invigorating walks through fallen leaves and, of course, the colours. The fields are still green, the heather paints the mountainsides purple, and the trees are dressed in reds, yellows, oranges and golds, providing a breath-taking backdrop to your holiday adventures.

It’s the perfect time to get outdoors in the UK. Walks in the countryside are a treat of autumnal colour, but the seas are also at their warmest, the rivers in full spate and, if we’re lucky, the Indian summer sunshine keeps you warm during daylight hours.

The cottages in our collection are set in prime locations to behold the true beauty of the British autumn:

The Cotswolds

Autumn is the ideal time for a romantic escape or break with friends in the Cotswolds. Its miles of winding walking trails cross farmland and wind through woodlands and breathtakingly scenic autumnal scenes; the warmth of the autumn colours and the hazy midday sun as it breaks through the trees will make you forget the cooler temperatures as the autumn takes hold - and the cosy local pubs and tearooms make an ideal retreat if they don’t!

The inglenook fireplace at Buckland Cottage, a cosy traditional English country holiday cottage retreat, is also the perfect place to end an autumn day spent exploring sections of the Cotswold Way. When the autumn sun dips below the horizon, retreat back within its walls, and enjoy the warmth of the stone fireplace.

Snowdonia

The autumn shows Snowdonia at its very best. There is still a lot of warmth in the sun, and the trips into the mountains or adventurous pursuits on the trails or rivers of the National Park are made magical by it’s golden hue as it illuminates the red and yellow falling leaves.

As the summer and winter converge in a riot of colour, you can enjoy the best of both worlds - walks in warm sunshine by day and hot chocolates and snuggles by the fire in the evening. Hilltop, Tailor’s Cottage and Little Manor are all traditional, Welsh stone cottages with warm and cosy firesides, unrivaled views of Snowdonia, and a trail that leads from your doorstep into the beautiful autumnal landscape.

Shropshire

Shropshire is a great place to visit in autumn. With its ancient woodlands, valleys and the beautiful Shropshire hills, autumn visitors are spoilt for choice. Lots of the best walks, wildlife and picnic spots in the area are all within easy reach of Little Cwm Colebatch. Shropshire is also home to some stunning National Trust properties perfect for spending an autumnal afternoon: Attingham Park, Sunnycroft and Dudmaston Estate are all great options in any weather.
