Family summer adventures

Hannah 22 May 2017

Summer is fast approaching, which means it’s time to start planning some fun activities for the family. We’re lucky in the UK that there are so many great destinations to enjoy fun summer adventures together, making UK holidays more popular than ever. What’s more, many of our favourite activity spots are situated within easy reach of our Sheepskin properties, allowing you to have great adventures during the day and enjoy luxury family accommodation for an unforgettable holiday.

UK summer adventure recommendations

Go Ape

Go Ape is the perfect place to enjoy some adventures with the family. With several locations across the UK, you can be sure of a wonderful time whether you are using Segways, riding down the zip wires or swinging from the trees. There’s a great Go Ape located in Keswick, Cumbria, perfect for a day of monkeying around!

Potholing

Potholing can be a great activity to get the family together, and taking part is a great way to learn about this minority sport. The Peak District is home to some great natural potholes, including Eldon Hole and Nettle Pot. Whilst potholing is not for the faint-hearted, it can be a great family bonding activity, and can introduce you to sights you won’t see anywhere else. For more information about potholing in the Peak District, Go Cave is a great place to start.

Potholing is hard work, and at the end of a long day you’ll want to have a rest. We have some fantastic Sheepskin properties which are great for families, with relaxing family rooms to enjoy, and great outdoor dining spaces for BBQs and summer feasts. Robin Hood Cottage is a great property for families of up to four people and it is in a convenient location for reaching many Peak District attractions.

Caving

Very similar to potholing and popular throughout the summer months is caving, and there are plenty of places where you can try it in the UK. Once again, the Peak District is a great choice for caving breaks, and Dolomite Training in Bakewell is one of the best training centres in the UK. Fully licensed and able to offer training to under 18s, it’s a great place for families to try their hand at caving over the summer. If you’re looking to spend some time enjoying the Brecon Beacons instead, the Adventure Britain team will be able to offer a fantastic caving experience, as well as plenty of other outdoor activities.

Explore a whole new world beneath the surface

Hawking

Hawking is an excellent activity to enjoy with the family, and allows you to get up close and personal with some of Britain’s best loved species of birds. There are hawking centres dotted all around the UK, but if you’re heading to the Cotswolds, the Cotswold Falconry Centre offers flying displays and one-to-one hawk flying tuition. It is just a short drive away from The Coach House, a picture-perfect country cottage ideal for families of up to four that offers tranquil country surroundings and plenty of home comforts.

If you want to experience something a little different, then Gigrin Farm, home to Wales’ famous Red Kite Feeding Station, allows you to see what was once Britain’s rarest bird of prey, but is now a thriving species once again, thanks to the efforts of the centre and various reintroduction initiatives in the UK. The feeding station is just 20 minutes’ drive from our aptly named Red Kite Tree Tent and Red Kite Barn.

Coasteering

For some adventures on the water, you can’t beat a bit of coasteering – exploring the coastline by rock hopping, shore scrambling, swell riding, cave exploration and cliff jumping. Coasteering is a great family activity which offers something different every time, and you’ll get to enjoy some spectacular views in the process. Coasteering Wales is a fantastic organisation which provides coasteering activities for both large and small groups.

Traverse land and sea on a coasteering adventure

For your coasteering stay, the stylish Upper Crossing in Pembrokeshire is fantastic and offers amazing accommodation for resting after your adventures on the water. Meanwhile, Ferry House is another inspiring property with its own private beach, modern interior and plenty of places to enjoy some wonderful walks. It is just 30 minutes from Vertical Descents, a coasteering company based near Fort William that offers a variety of family activity packages.

Our luxury accommodation offers plenty of exciting experiences for families, starting from the moment you arrive; with great things to do and places to explore, and you can be sure that a spectacular adventure is never far away.
