Ludlow’s narrow, winding streets house many independent shops and tempting delis, and with our handy shopping guide, you’ll be sure of a wonderful day of retail therapy.
Start your tour of Ludlow at the bottom of Tower Street, outside The Queens Pub (which incidentally is a great place to get a drink at the end of the day!). The French Pantry is sure to catch your eye – open Monday to Saturday 12-2.30 and 6.30-8.30, it offers authentic French cuisine that the Michelin Guide 2014 described as ‘hearty and full of flavour’.
Make your way up to the Bull Ring where you’ll be able to snap up a bargain in the likes of ethical clothing and accessories shop Tiger Lily. If you’re a stationery connoisseur, don’t miss The Bindery Shop, where the range of vibrantly coloured hand-bound journals, notebooks and diaries make for a feast for the eyes.
Once you’ve exhausted the Bull Ring, make your way onto Corve Street, a haven of quirky interiors shops such as Gallery 131, Holloways, Abode and The Period House on one side of the street and a series of great places to eat and drink on the other. Kit out your home as you make your way down one side of the street then choose from modern British fine dining at Mortimers, simple, local and delicious fare at Bistro No.7 or maybe just some liquid sustenance at The Dog Hangs Well.
It’s easy to get pleasurably lost in Ludlow’s winding streets, discovering new and interesting shops and tiny independent cafes and delis at every turn.
Pop into the Harp Lane Deli on Church Street if you’re still in search of tasty treats. From there you can explore the market in the main square and walk around Ludlow Castle for a cultural interlude to the retail therapy. If a lunch stop is needed at this time, you’ll find a smashing sandwich at the Ludlow Pantry, the Ludlow Food Centre’s city centre shop and café.
With batteries recharged, trop off to 55 Mill Street, an amazing emporium of vintage finds arranged over multiple floors and well worth exploring for several hours, especially if you love retro fashion and decorative antiques.
It seems impossible to hurry anywhere in Ludlow, so even with the end of the day approaching you may still be able to pop into a few more shops before heading back to your holiday cottage. If you’ve got time, squeeze in a visit to Black Bough, which is named after a line in an Ezra Pound poem that encourages us to see beauty in everyday things. This quirky shop stocks a mix of old and new items, but the focus is always on good design and good craftsmanship.
Now, find a pub, put your feet up and pat yourself on the back for surviving an action-packed day of shopping!
