12 Things to do…Be a tourist at home!

Particularly in the UK, with it’s diverse towns and landscapes, we all live in and drive past many historic, intriguing and inspiring places yet we seldom appreciate or make time to visit them.

We’re in walking distance of Oxford centre but have yet to visit any of the colleges and have visited Cragside many times but still not walked to the Iron age Hillfort sitting less than a mile above it.

There is the draw of our historic cities but as with all countries, you must venture out and explore to really find the true culture and heritage.   Here we’ve singled out specific visitor attractions but there are plenty of natural open spaces to discover for free in the National Parks

Chatsworth House, near Music Mill in the Peak District, makes a great day out for all ages with the stunning house and the 105 acres of garden to explore and even a farmyard and woodland adventure playground.

Staying at Tamar cottages you are just 7 miles from Morwellham Quay is an award-winning Victorian heritage village where you can explore the cottages, school and shops of the 1860s.   There is a narrow-gauge Mine Railway that takes you along the banks of the River Tamar before venturing deep underground in the George & Charlotte copper mine.  The historic port, mine workings, Estate and the Tamar Valley Wildlife reserve are a great place to spend the day near the beautiful River Tamar

Laugharne Castle is just 5 minutes walk from Great House.  Established in the early 12th century as an earthwork castle and transformed into a Tudor mansion in the 16th century and later frequented by Dylan Thomas during his writing of Under Milk Wood.

Staying at Cider House you have several great opportunities to see majestic historic buildings.
If you are a keen walker the 19 mile Three castles walk passes the door of Cider House with three beautiful castles; White, Skenfrith, Grosmont to discover on the way

Llanthony Priory, the ruins of a 13th Century Augustinian church, in the picturesque and remote Vale of Ewyas, it doesn’t have very much of interior left but it is a stunning place to visit and is very photogenic!  Perhaps a perfect opportunity to be inspired to take photographs for the Great British Life competition
